Tom, I think you hit it on the head. I certainly wouldn't have seen this place if it weren't for the Hinge posting the link on your board- no publicity is bad publicity right? I have fished AZ several times over the years and it leaves a little something to be desired but the family has a vacation home there so I keep going back. Next time around I'm going to try the White Mountains area and see what I can turn up. This place is getting a bookmark for it's solid information and good format. Nice work.

Tom, very nicely put. I have been following Aaron's site since it's inception and enjoy the articles and photos very much. Not sure why some folks need to get so personal when it comes to their opinions on articles. I know fly fishing is very personal to most to bash someone publicly so strongly is not necessary. I have to hand it to Aaron for pulling his Owyhee piece in order to fix any so called inaccuracies. I have fished the Owywee 25 or 30 times and most of what Aaron wrote was accurate in my estimation. If there was inaccuracies it was drive time from Boise, length of river, you know the really important things. I would be curious as to what these so called inaccuracies are according to The Hinge!
I was born and raised in Arizona, spent 43 years there and trust me, the rim streams are known by all, but most don't bother fishing there. They are for the most part put and take streams and most of the fisher takers wont' walk more than 100 yards from where they park. Aaron's article may have added one or two fly fisherman to the ranks, and they will C&R guys anyways.
Aaron, keep on writing, you have a wonderful writing style and your photographs are beautiful. I especially like the photos of your son. Keep on keepin' on!

Thanks Tom - I honestly cringe now when I get a notice in my inbox about another comment being made. Truth be told I couldn't approve all of their comments, these were just the cleanest and least vulgar things they wrote. Thanks for the feedback, I prefer to write short stories and non-destination /how-to pieces. However as you alluded to above, folks don't want to publish that I learned quick after getting turned down with all my creative type writing.

It makes me a bit sad they would put a link to my website somewhere like the DRAKE in an attempt to slam my writing. As a courtesy to them I removed my O piece and plan to rewrite it after I spend another week there in the spring. When I shot them a note telling communicating this to them – they posted my comparison to a $2.00 ………. Needless to say I didn’t want to have to explain it to anyone’s children or family who frequent my site, and didn’t post it.

Considering I’ve gotten easily 10 to 1 hate mail on things I’ve wrote so far - I’m very thankful for your kind words.

Sincerely,

A

To Lando and the Hinge: Wow. I'm always surprised to find people with your level of negativity in the flyfishing industry. I just never thought it existed.

So this guy Aaron wants to become a flyfishing writer. He puts himself out there on a couple stories, you guys call him out (nothing wrong with that, to a degree, especially if he's inaccurate) but then Aaron takes the high road and actually ASKS the two of you for help, and you STILL trash him? What is wrong with you? Seriously?

Lando, what about people who weren't lucky enough to be born into a family that has had "a cabin on the rim for three generations?" Do they have no right to fish up there?

I lived in AZ right after college and fished all of the waters mentioned in Aarons stories here. And yes, it's always a little disheartening when new people discover water you've been fishing for years. But this is ARIZONA--there aren't a whole lot of choices there. Give the guy a break.

Besides, I always laugh a bit when I see people on websites like this come down so hard on the writers. Writers only write what editors want to publish. I have a magazine called The Drake where the how-to,where-to stuff is virtually non-existent. As the publisher, I just prefer essays, fiction, humor, etc. Partly this is because I just don't care much for that type of writing. But also it's just because that's what all the other magazines were already doing. Yet I'll say this: as some kid who'd just arrived in Arizona, I would have LOVED to stumble across Arron's piece here on the Mogollon Rim. Anybody who wants to find this sort of info can certainly find much of it with just a few clicks of the mouse anyway. SW Flyfishing just wraps it up in a nice package and delivers it. What's wrong with that?

At LEAST Aaron's story suggests that anglers not fish there when the temps are too high, and he encourages catch and release--something all to infrequent, as I recall, among the Power Bait set in that state.

And what about John Rohmer at Arizona Flyfishing? Doesn't he deserve a bit of support as a small-business owner just trying to make a living? I actually worked with John very briefly at the shop back in 1992, just before moving to Wyoming, and I can tell you that he's one of the all time good guys. Wouldn't you rather have someone go into his shop or read Aaron's story and learn how to properly release a fish, rather than go up there and bonk everything they get their hooks into?

And Hinge, another thing: Why, if you're so concerned about overexposing the Owyhee, would you come onto The Drake site and provide a link to this site? Is it in hopes that people will come over here and see how you cleverly skewered Aaron? Is it because you, too, seek that on-line attention that you accuse Aaron of?

Lastly, to "The Hinge"-- if you think the OWYHEE gets too much publicity then you haven't been to many other places. Because if you can't find some privacy on THAT river, then you aren't trying very hard.

Not sure how any of my writing is hotspotting any more then the folks who have written about it before me. You're also making the assumption I was writing to get respect from the fly fishing community as well. Honestly that never was really a concern for me. Considering at this moment there is only one thing on that site that is in publication. The rest so far is just for me and that all things I wrote about with the exception of my son have all been published by nationally syndicated magazines in the last 12-16 months by other folks, I certainly hope you two the dynamic duo of web justice on all things fly fishing have given the other authors a stern talking too as well. I would hate the to think that you came to trash my site which my family goes to and sees pictures of their nephew, grandson, son out of personal spite.

Does it make you feel better? I guess that would be a win at some level, and would help take the sting out of it. Sooner or later I will have to explain to my 87 year old grandmother when she reads your comments on the computer we bought her for Christmas last year, why folks I've never meet who don't know me from Adam need to say such harsh things. I guess it would be much easier to just erase your comments, and let the folks who know me like, my grandmother, still be proud and tell her lady friends every Wednesday how her grandson was in a magazine and how sent her the first copy etc etc. Instead of letting her see what is out there, but I'll leave it. I put myself out there, right or wrong, fair or unfair I let myself be in the public eye and so really your feedback is my fault, I gave you the platform.

This may sound contrarian to you, but I honestly feel for you. I hope that some time in your life you will come to see when it's all over you're impact on this life is remembered by what you brought to it not what you took from it or could dismantle while you were here.

My best wishes for you,

A

Re: Moggolon Rim fishing article

If the tiny streams of the Mogollon Rim are so fragile, then why would you write about them? Is seeing your name in print (next to an error-filled article) worth the damage you will undoubtedly do by sending people to these places? If the trout are so spooky and require stealth, why is that peron in the photograph practically standing in the water? Maybe it's because she knows something about the fishing in this area, unlike you. Thanks for helping ruin yet another part of Arizona. My family has had a cabin on the Rim for three generations and each year it gets worse and worse with all the maggots from the Phoenix area who come up here and crowd the place.
